Winfield Area EMS

Education

There are multiple levels of prehospital care providers, although Winfield EMS currently employs the two most common - an EMT and a MICT or Paramedic.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a basic level pre-hospital health care provider.  The EMT-B training program is generally one college semester in length (approx. 10 college credit hours). EMT's receive the necessary training, hospital critical care area rotations or field internship to perform the following basic life support skills:

  • Taking Vital Signs
  • Patient Assessment
  • Airway Management
  • CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)
  • Basic Trauma Management
  • External Semi-Automatic Defibrillation
  • Medical Emergency Management
  • Basic Pharmacology
  • Splinting
  • Wound Care
  • Blood Glucose Monitoring
  • Oxygen Administration
  • Safe and Efficient Transport

A minimum of an EMT certification is required to be eligible for employment or acceptance into the reserve program.

Mobile Intensive Care Technician (MICT/Paramedic)
Mobile Intensive Care Technician (MICT) or Paramedic is the highest level of pre-hospital emergency care provider in the State of Kansas.  The requirement to become an MICT is the completion of an approved D.O.T. 1,200 hour training course. MICT's provide advanced emergency pre-hospital life support.
Advanced medical procedures that MICT's (paramedic's) deliver include:

  • Intravenous Infusions
  • Administering Medications
  • Advanced Airway Management
  • Gastric Suctioning
  • EKG Monitoring
  • Cardiac Defibrillation
  • External Cardiac Pacing
  • Advanced Trauma Care
  • Emergency Childbirth
  • Management of Critical Medical Emergencies
  • Chest Decompression
  • Safe and Efficient Transport

With current staffing and shift rotations, when an ambulance is requested, there will almost always be a Paramedic on-board or available to provide advanced level care.

In order to maintain a superior level of care in a fast paced world, continuing education is extremely important. Everyday there is a new piece of technology or new information pertaining to the care that is given to our patients. To make sure our technicians are educated about any change, Winfield EMS provides multiple education opportunities to ensure everyone is providing the most advanced care possible.

Many technicians employed by the service are certified instructors for certifications including ACLS, PHTLS, PALS, and CPR. These classes are taught to groups to further the medical knowledge in the public and healthcare system.

Public Education
Winfield Area EMS is dedicated to improving the public knowledge of healthcare relating to specifc illnesses, injuries, general knowledge of EMS and pertinent information regarding personal health and safety. Multiple education classes are held each year, most available to the public, with others being specifically for healthcare providers. If you have a topic you find interesting and would like information on or think it would make a good class, please contact Maj. Justin Waite at jwaite@winfieldems.org.
